lyrics

I would trade you cornbread
and tomatoes and basil
for another story
blue masa brown rice
tomatoes from the lady off Spring Creek
good plateau farm country
where I get milk

Basil from upstairs
the ones I say good morning too
and sleep tight sweet dreams
and water with rain
and plant again
when the first ones flower

I would give you this patch of sunshine
if you would take me under water again
where your eyes burn but you have to look
and watch out for rocks
and you do not know
that you know how to swim
but you do to get to the shore

You will be hungry
wet and sandy and salty
your hair and your eyelashes
and your skin scrubbed pink
I will skim the cream
and make you butter
so you can warm up
and your teeth can stop chattering
and you can tell me
another story

Or send me silence
wrapped in handmade hanji
made of mulberry
the finest fibers of Cham Dak
long to repair my running tears
flexible to renew my tattered edges
strong to fill my losses

When it grows cold and gold
in the high country
I will bring you gooseberries
make you rose hip tea
draw you outside to show you
the eyes under the wings
of the ragged butterfly
kneel to the miniature sunflowers
that keep blooming past first frost
and let a male bumble bee crawl onto my finger
cold and tired but he cannot stop until it snows
antennae carving arcs in air
he smells as sweet as the flowers he slept on

When the snow comes that stops all sound
when the snow comes that stops breath
that is when I will climb Korean hillsides
unravel the dak bark
dig the hibiscus root
and with the water from the cleanest creeks
prepare the finest paper
transparent like my heart
a hammock to hold your silent story
to sing me to sleep at night
